My new ( Sony bdp-s1 ) has a wide black band across the top
and bottom of my 73 inch tv and I am told to deal with it.
The user manual explains how to eliminate the lines but nothing
changes, can you offer any help?

You mean the letterboxing? That’s normal for both BD, DVD, and HD DVD. Most movies aren’t shot at the HDTV’s standard 16:9 aspect ratio, but at something wider. If you don’t like it, your TV should have a stretch mode or two to help deal with it. But I’d just leave it alone - this way you’re watching the whole picture.
