DLP RPTV and LCD/PDP Costs
DigitTimes has a small article about the cost of a rear-projection HDTV versus the cost of an equivalent-sized LCD or plasma display. It makes for interesting reading.
The stats are for a 52″ 1080p television, and they are:
All component costs:
LCD $1621
plasma $1749
DLP $807
In other words, it costs twice as much to hang your 1080p 52″ television on your wall instead of placing it on your floor. Frankly, I’m surprised. I thought it was more than that.

I’m not sure what manufacturing cost has to do with the cost of hanging any TV on the wall, but it is interesting to note that current-gen plasma screens from major manufacturers now have a service life of 60,000 hours.
DLP, LCD and LCoS projection lamp in sets from the same major manufacturers have a life of about 4000 hours when the set is run with the default color settings (maybe 4500 hours if you cut the brightness way down.)
At about $200 per bulb, that’s about $3000 in light-bulb changes before a plasma screen goes dark. Whatever technology you pick, be sure to go with a reputable name brand — generic and house brand projector bulbs usually die in under 1000 hours and low-grade plasmas suffer similarly truncated lifespans.
