No Combo Player from Samsung?
Recently there’s been the news going around that Samsung is still interested in doing a combo BD / HD DVD player. Lots of people were excited about the prospect, because buying such a player would protect your hard earned cash. You wouldn’t have to throw it out if you chose the wrong side.
I didn’t report on this because this was old news that resurfaced recently, and I had better things to talk about. But now it looks like Samsung might not be so interested after all. In a statement to the press Samsung says:
“Samsung Electronics is fully committed to the Blu-ray format and currently only has plans to introduce a Blu-ray player to the market. Samsung is looking forward to a very successful launch of the BD-P1000 which will be available on retail shelves, June 25th for a $999 MAP price in the United States.”
Note the word “only”. Samsung if fully backing the BD format and my guess is all this talk of a combo player was just in the event that HD DVD became a popular choice. So for now, Samsung is doing what it can to make BD a success.

I don’t think there was anything old about it. The samsung exec quoted was quoted in the last few days regarding the combo player possibility. The strength of samsung’s blu-ray commitment isn’t necessarily in question to me, they’re the ones who have actually shipped a player when they said they would so far. but if the reports are true and Sony is shipping inferior titles at launch while delaying their own player, possibly until better quality titles are available, that’s gotta put Samsung in a weird position. I’m sure they have a player in some stage of development, the question is whether or not they feel the need to bring it out.

This same information, that Samsung might be putting out a combo Blu-ray / HD DVD player, was doing the rounds months ago. There is no new information is what’s been going around recently. I’d call that old news.

Perhaps you didn’t see this article that mention an executive talking about it on tuesday.

This is the first mention I’ve heard of it since they scrapped their original plans. . No there is no specific information, but if it exists after it was originally cancelled, that would seem to be new to me.

I did see that, but like I said, there was no new information over the last time we heard the same rumour.
