Sony unveils BD Player

Yesterday Sony announced plans for its BDP-S1 BD (Blu-ray Disc) player. Sony’s BD player will be released in July for around $1000. It’ll support 1080p on its HDMI output and 1080i on its analog component output. It will upscale normal DVD’s to 1080p, should you wish that, on the HDMI connection as well.

Something that we’ve all been wondering about - BD-Java interactivity support - has been included as well. It’s good to know that the first BD players won’t be crippled. Sound-wise, it’ll deliver uncompressed multi-channel linear PCM digital audio output via HDMI, for those receivers and preprocessors that can handle it. And an optical digital output with good old 5.1 digital sound will be there for those of us who don’t have the newfangled audio electronics (though it’s not for lack of trying).

Sony will also be selling VAIO computers with a BD burner built in.
