Review: Sharp PN-455 LCD Monitor (HDTVexpert)

HDTVexpert reviews this 1920 x 1080 HD monitor. It’s a nice 45″ design, so it can be used as a television as well, if you have a cable box or somesuch to hook it up to. It has some pretty weird connections, but if you have a DVI-D output, then that’ll be all you need for this set. If you have an HDMI output instead, an HDMI to DVI converter should work for you.

The brightness on this set is pretty good, but the black levels aren’t that great (a common problem with LCD panels). This also affects the contrast ratio, which also wasn’t as good as typical plasma displays. But both of these problems are common with LCD panels, and is an artifact of the technology, not of Sharp’s lack of technical acumen. But if you want another problem, here it is: the set doesn’t display the whole colour space. It actually comes up pretty short, only covering about 70% of the REC-709 colour space.

Surprisingly, this set does accept 1080p progressive on its RGB input and 1080p/24 on its DVI-D input as well.

The reviewer’s conclusion:

Sharp’s PN-455 would make an excellent choice for any digital display. It can handle a wide range of PC and video signal formats, has just enough connectors to be practical (notwithstanding those crazy jumpers), and is pretty much even with the state of the art in LCD contrast, brightness, and color when using cold-cathode fluorescent lamps.
