Review: Mitsubishi WD-62628
c|net reviews the Mitsubishi WD-62628 DLP rear-projection HDTV. It gives the TV a 6.9 out of 10.
It’s a monster at 62″ diagonal. To feed that 62″ screen, the projector has a 1080p DLP engine. However, it’s one of those wobulation designs that use a 960 x 1080 grid of mirrors. The light from array of mirrors is shifted slightly to produce the missing 960 x 1080 set of pixels. Thus a 1920 x 1080 grid of light is born. I have to say I’m not sure I trust this technology, but it seems to give good results.
The set has two HDMI inputs and two Firewire inputs. That’s great expandability that I wish every HDTV had. The set also has great blacks, something DLP is better at than competing LCD, and LCOS technologies. However, the set exhibits bad color decoding, bad image resolution, and the HDMI inputs don’t accept 1080p.

How can Mitsubishi advertise the WD-62628 as a 1080P TV when it’s HDMI inputs will not accept a 1080P signal? I called Mitsubishi direct and they gave me the runaround about how it can do it over the firewire input. All the devises I know of i.e. HDDVD, BlueRay, and satellite use HDMI ouputs for a 1080P signal. I know of no device that ouputs 1080P over firewire. Does anyone out there agree with me that Mitsubishi represented the capabilities of this TV and that they should replace the WD-62628 at no cost to the consumer with thier newer model that does accept 1080P over their HDMI input?
December 18th, 2006 at 8:57 pm
Maybe they just need to make it clear that there’s no 1080p HDMI input?
December 19th, 2006 at 11:37 pm
Thats the point. They didn’t make it clear in 2005.
December 29th, 2006 at 1:25 pm
I agree texeast, Mitsubishi pulled a fast one here. I just got off the phone with customer relations and was told the same thing about firewire. It seems like a software upgrade to me. What about you? I wouldn’t think this would be a big deal to upgrade. I was also told by customer relations that they have no models that accept 1080p signal over hdmi. I don’t think this is correct.
Maybe a lawsuit is in order.

NMM,
Thanks for the words of support. I think the only recourse will be a class action suite since Mitsubishi seems to be dogging this one. I know for a fact that their newer models accept 1080p over hdmi. If anyone else out their agrees let us know as their is more power in numbers.
January 3rd, 2007 at 5:50 am
Same Problem here! I feel like a total dumbass for buying this TV, specially at this price. I got it in february so I can’t return it. Totally dooped.
January 12th, 2007 at 10:50 pm
Likewise. Any headway on this issue? I’d love to stick it to them. I even have a receipt from a store that says 1080p on it!!!
January 13th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
SAME PROBLEM WITH HDMI CONNECTION
I BOUGHT TV SO COULD PLAY BLUERAY AT 1080P AND CANNOT FIGURE OUT IF THERES ANYWAY TO MAKE A HDMI TO FIREWIRE CONNECTION FROM THE PLAYSTATION 3
AM NOT HAPPY THIS WAS FALSE ADVERTISING AND WAS REPRESENTED BY FRYS ELECTRONICS AS A 1080P TV THAT WOULD PLAY THE BLUE RAY AT 1080P ANY SUGGESTIONS?????????
January 15th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Thanks everyone for the comments. I really think we need to get some more people together and file a class action lawsuit.
January 17th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
i have the same problem, my reciept also shows 1080p. I got the PS3 a few days ago and thought great i finally get to use my 1080p and it won’t work through the HDMI input. What kind of crap is that, it only get 1080p through the firewire port, theres no device out that uses firewire port. I was also told by frys electronics that this tv is 1080p but there was no way to use anything cause blueray was just coming out and it was so expensive to buy back then. I am down for whatever lawsuit you want to bring up with them
January 30th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Yeah, this is BS. I too bought this for the expandability and promise of 1080P. Even has a sign on the screen that states 1080P. I think Mitsubishi should be held accountable for such a gross misrepresentation. I’d like to add my name to a class actrion suit list.
February 8th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
I just filed a complaint with the BetterBusinessBureau about this very situation, because I’m right in the middle of it! Like you, I’m pissed off and want something done. A guy from Mitsubishi called me today, and said the TV is doing what it said it said it was going to do and the people who sold it to you, apparently didn’t have the information to let me know it upconverted to 1080p. There was nothing he said he could do about it. BS!!! We need an attorney… I’m filing another complaint against Fry’s today, where I bought it. They are not going to give me even a fraction for what I bought it for. Anyone else made any headway?
February 11th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Same story here. Called Mitsubishi as well as the place I purchased the TV from and got the same runaround about 1080P. Mitsubishi screwed up when they stamped the 1080P emblem on the front of this TV. Truth in advertising was not followed. A simple Internet search of old web sites also advertises this television as a 1080P model, and is sold as such. I will be contacting an attorney this week to start the process of taking Mitsubishi to task on this matter. Settlement should include nothing less than providing 1080P in the manner any reasonable person would expect from their advertising. This problem only becomes evident as more 1080P components become available and people who connect them to this model make this discovery. Time to get the gloves on.
February 12th, 2007 at 12:51 am
I purchased the big brother of this unit. WD-73727. Although I am throughly impressed by the picture quality. I am engraged that it doesn’t support 1080p over HDMI. There is near almost no way to get around that barrier. If you are planning on doing a class action lawsuit sign me up!
I purchased the TV for the 1080p feature. I can’t use it now. What a waste as I paid a premium for this when it came out.
February 13th, 2007 at 1:05 am
I’ll keep all interested of my developments as I discuss the possible actions against Mitsubishi with an attorney. It is typically a long process before any remedy is reached, however, starting is the only way to finish.

I recently sent this Email to Mitsubishi, I doubt it will do any good. I felt misled and victim of a fraud. This is at least false advertising.
We recently purchased this TV set WD-62628 : 62″ 1080p DLP™ HDTV from an Authorised dealer, the marketing point being the 1080p capability and superior performance with upcoming new input devices. We tried to hook up our new Blue Ray DVD player yesterday. through the HDMI input and the TV display still detects a 1080i not a 1080p signal, even though the DVD output is a 1080p.
We called the dealer and we were told that the WD-62628 can accept and recognize 1080p signals ONLY through the “coaxial port” in other words only the 1080p signals that come off the air (none of them exist). We were offered to purchase a newer model tha has 1080p capabilities through the HDMI input, but of course they would not take our current TV set back as a trade in since it is “obsolete”
This is a major disappointment and we feel that we were misled, we were sold technology that cannot be used.
We would like to be able to use our TV set for what has been advertised, a 1080p system that accepts native 1080p signals and we want to use our new Blue Ray DVD player with it.
Can the TV be modified to accept 1080p through the HDMI port like the newer sets?
Regards
Francesco Grasso

I just posted a Message on the Consumer Reports Website and sent an Email to Peter Angelos Attorney Firm in Baltimore (famous for the countrywide asbestos litigation).
Hopefully they may be interested in the issue, there may be some money in it for them.

Francesco,
Any news updates on your efforts?
May 22nd, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Sign me up for that suit … I was conned too.
I was aware that when I bought the TV that it could not accept 1080P through the HDMI, but I was assured by both Fry’s (where I bought it) and the Home Video Store that Mitsubishi had “commited” to upgrade the set in the future to 1080P via a firmware update. In fact the Guy at the HV Store went as far as to say that Mitsubishi had “guaranteed” that all of their 1080i sets would be upgradeable. If I had not been given this guarantee I would not have bought the set and would have waited another six months for the next gen to come out, it certainly would have been cheaper to wait.
I’ve tried several times with Mitsu’ to get the patch, and even installed one firmware upgrade, but I also get the run around on the subject of 1080P.
My original understanding was that the lack of 1080P support was because the HD anti-copying protocol for the HDMI interface had not been finalized at the time and as soon as it was we would have the patch … Well it’s been finalized for a while now and I’d really like to use my PS3 at 1080P as I had originally planned. So sign me up!
June 13th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
I was aware when I purchased the WD 52628 in Nov 05 that it accepted 1080p only through the FireWire. However, I was also led to believe by the salesperson and by Mitsubishi customer service that a firmware update was possible to allow the TV to accept 1080p over HDMI. I’ve waited 19 months and still no firmware update. I suspect that firmware will not do the job and requires a hardware chage. This was all a bate and switch to sell the TVs with “future upgrade” potential. The only way to get 1080p signal input is to buy a new TV with that hardware technology. I demand a recall for hardware retrofit. Sign me up with the class action.
June 17th, 2007 at 12:57 am
I too have a WD-62628 and am not happy about the 1080P being missing from the set… If there’s a class action suit born out of this, sign me up!!!

Well, add another sucker to the list…I just got a ps3 after having this TV for the better part of a year and found out I can’t use 1080p…
If anyone makes any headway on a lawsuit I’ll be happy to help in any way I can
June 25th, 2007 at 4:33 pm
As I understand it the TV can accept 1080p through the Fire Wire input, doesn’t that suggest that the hardware is already there … it just needs to be fed from the HDMI. That would jive with what I was originally told … see my previous post.
I have just e-mailed Mitsu’ asking them directly if we will ever get a firmware upgrade allowing 1080p through HDMI and I included the URL for this blog.
If (I’m not holding my breath) I hear something back from them I will update the site.
July 6th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
I just bought the xbox 360 hd dvd and found out that it doesn’t accept 1080p over HDMI, which is why i paid the extra money. Very pissed off.
Count me in!
July 20th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
I purchased the Mitsubishi WD-73927, their top of the line set about a year ago and I too was swindled into the belief that I would be able to get 1080P to work with my Bluray equipment. I bought a PS3 which is Bluray and does 1080P output and if of course doesn’t work.
Also my set has been in the shop for the last 6 weeks for a blown optical engine while Mitsubishi drags their feet getting to part shipped out to no avail. I’m very disappointed and outraged that they are willingly ad blatantly misrepresenting a product that costs thousands. I paid over $6000.00 for my set. Please count me in for the lawsuit if it does indeed take off. Mitsubishi is woefully wrong in their fraudulent practice of bate and switch.
July 27th, 2007 at 11:38 pm
count me in too if there is anything we can do i have a WD-52628 and i want to use my sony blu-ray in 1080p.
August 3rd, 2007 at 11:02 am
I have the Mitsubishi WD-73727, and after 18 months my optical engine also went out. I’ve been waiting 6 weeks now for the replacement part. They say it will be in next week (which is the 3rd time they’ve told me that). Part of the problem is that Tweaters filed for bankruptcy and Mitsubishi was not honoring their parts orders. It will be interesting to see if this “new” optical engine will include the firmware upgrade necessary to accept 1080p (which was also why I bought the set, although I didn’t get my blueray player until 6 mths after my purchase.)
August 20th, 2007 at 11:17 pm
I too would love to be involved in the class action against Mitsubishi regarding the WD-62628. They clearly advertised the set as true 1080p capable. They will try to say that they never said it was capable through HDMI. However, as this is and was the prevailing standard and they never provided documentation stating that 1080p could only be acheived via firewire this is misrepresentation. In addition to the law suit we should start a website with an anti Mitsubishi campaign. This has proven very effective with other companys.
August 24th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
You got one more sucker to join the crowd. I bought the 73″ 73927 with the expectation that I would be able to run a Blu Ray player through the HDMI port. Like everyone else I found out the hard away that I was grossly misled. If a class action suit gets up and running I am most definitely on-board. Additionally, I bought this set from Ultimate Electronics In Denver, Colorado and they too indicated that this TV was 1080P/Blu-Ray ready. I’m going to post a complaint through the BBB here. Considering the money I paid for this thing based on a false promise I’d love to see Mitsubishi have to pay for their unethical and illegal business practices.
August 31st, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Please add myself to the class action suit. I have been back and forth with Magnolia about my WD62628 about false advertisement, all they could tell me is wait for the firmware update.
September 2nd, 2007 at 3:02 pm
I, too, was mislead regarding the 1080P capability when I bought my WD-62827 Diamond from Fry’s here in San Diego on 11/17/05 with a 5 year extended warranty. The 1080P sticker was on the front of the set along with the other feature stickers, and I was told that the HDMI would handdle the signal, so I bought the best Monster cables available.
I bought a SonyBlue Ray last month expecting the best picture available…..What a load of crap, as 1080I was the best available. I was also told by tech support that the 1080P signal could come through the Firewire connection…Another load!
Please keep me advised of a lawsuit as I feel we were all sucked in by Mitsubishi and the outlets that we bought our sets from with high expectations.
September 3rd, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Add me to your list of “suckers” as well. I bought the WD-73727 last year and it doesn’t accept 1080p through the hdmi port even though the tv’s main selling point was 1080p. Yes, the image is awesome as it is but that doesn’t excuse Mitsubishi’s false media campaign and advertising. This Mitsubishi press release proves they misled all of us. Where does it say it doesn’t accept 1080p?

September 6th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
first off - none of us are suckers. we were promised a 1080p televsion both by the documentation and the sales person. the only way we will ever get anything done is to be the squeaky wheel. i encourage all of you to contact the bbb and file complaints about mits and the store you bought the television from. it seems to me that mits spent the whole year selling something that they knew all the well would never support what they promised and the only reason for this was to keep with the other manufacuturers. is there anyone out there that can tell me what firewire device can support 1080p? the loudest voice wins - - –
September 12th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
I am glad to see that all you guys are engaged. I too have contacted Mitsubishi several times. The first time I talked to customer relations I got the run around and kept pursuing the issue until I was told that their engineering department was working on a fix and it would be out the first quarter of 2007. After that time passed, I sent a certified letter to Mitsubishi and received a call from their Customer Relations that told me that the signal is being received and being upconverted to 1080P. I can tell you that this is BS and judging from the number of people that have been bilked, we need to go for a class action suit against these guys. This is fraud and false advertisement. I am contacting my congressional representative and asking for an investigation.
September 20th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Please if anyone has contacted a lawyer, let me know.
Add me to the list.
I will check with an attorney to, and get mack to this site if I have any news.
I told my congressman that this was like him telling his constituency that he will talk to anyone that comes to see him, but then locks the door and won’t let anyone in, unless there from another state.
(what do you think, good anaolgy?)
September 27th, 2007 at 9:21 am
Please add myself to the class action suit. I purchased the WD62628 model only to find out about the 1080p false advertising scam.
September 30th, 2007 at 10:14 am
I also got duped I was under the impression I was getting 1080p I was told by the salesmen at Best Buy. I went out got a ps3 still 1080i. Please add me to the class action suit, thanks.
October 1st, 2007 at 11:37 am
Count me in too. I got 2 of the WD-62628 for almost 10Gs when it first came out from Fry’s. I think we should sue them both Fry’s and Mitsubishi for misled and fraud. I like most all of yall, I went through all the BS talking from them. Fry’s told me to talk to Mitsubishi since they are a bunch of dumb ass sell Reps did not know nothing about what they sale or lied. I called Mitsubishi and they told me just the same bullshit like they did to yall that 1080p will have to use the Firewire input ( what kind of bullshit is it).
Last month 1 of my WD-62628 light burned. I contact Mitsubishi and they told me that I have to buy a replacement light from them for about $500. I told them what kind of shit is that I spent almost $10,000 for 2 of WD-62628 and 1 last for less than 2 years. So, I file a complaint with their management. It took about 2 weeks for them to contact me. They ask me to fax them the receipt, so I did. I just call them today and they told me that the warranty on the light only 1 year and it depends on how often I used it. Again I told them they are full of shit, I told the Rep even I used it 10 hrs a day and for less then 2 years the light should be ok. He tried to blame it on me instead of try to resolve the issue. Then he offered me to purchase the light with their special discount for $170+tax+shipping. I refused and demand to speak to the higher level of management. He told me their management will contact me in 1 week.
i say we need to get together and sue the shit out of Fry’s and Mitsubishi. This is bullshit guys, we need to do something.
October 2nd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
What is the first step in filing suit?
I paid just under 4 grand only to find out that 1080p resolution is a no go on the WD-62628….
October 5th, 2007 at 2:10 am
Me too I bought the WD-73927 and my light engine is going out as well. This really stinks when you spend that kind of money and you get about 18 months before it blows up Mitsubishi needs to fix this issue and upgrade those it duped
October 11th, 2007 at 5:47 pm
Same crap with 1080p not working with hdmi only through fire wire. what has been done guys add me to the suit
October 13th, 2007 at 5:58 pm
I too am a very disgruntled owner of a Mits WD-62628 who feels like I have been duped. I was told that this DLP was 1080P compatible. It is with firewire but who is using firewire? The answer NO ONE!!! Mits intentionally deceived us and that is wrong.
October 15th, 2007 at 4:16 am
I have the WD-73727 and have just learned that I am in the same position as the other members here regarding the 1080p issue.I have just purchased an xbox with hdmi.Has any progress been made from contacting an attorney? If there is any pending action please count me in as well.Thank you jerngee@optonline.net
October 16th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Finally the rep from Mis called me today. I told him how their company and Fry’s had cheated us. He told me that the TV is 1080p Up-conversion. Which mean the TV will up-convert from 1080i signal to 1080p itself. You will get truly 1080p when you get the HD signal from the broadcast stations but not the from HD players. I told the guy what kind of shit is that. He said Mis company told the retailers all about their product information, it just the retailers that lied to us. He just full of shit because if yall remember that when we bought the TV there were a big sign 1080P from Mitsubishi in front of the TV. Anyway I was getting tired of his bullshit so I demanded to speaker to the top manager. The manager name AJ, he offer me a new light for about $200. I just hangup on him. We need to do something guys.
October 22nd, 2007 at 3:23 pm
I would love to join in on a class action suit against Mitsubishi on this.
I paid over $1,300.00 above the 1080i model to get the 1080p capabilities of this TV. Now, a year later, I purchased a HD DVD player only to find out that there is no 1080p input on this television to accept the 1080p signal! It was advertised and sold as a true 1080p television. Mitsubishi obviously rushed to get this model on the market before it had the inputs to match the capabilities of the output. By doing this they screwed a lot of customers.
I won’t be buying the Mitsubishi brand ever again!
October 29th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Hello:
Okay, I came here looking for one thing and see most comments are something else, 1080P vs 1080I. I am not tech savy so not really sure what you guys are talking about. Here is my problem. I bought a 52628 17 months ago. paid 3600.00. 32 days ago my bulb and engine went out. I contacted my retailer who told me to contact mit. CS told me to get an estimate and fax it to them along with my original purchase invoice. The service rep finally made it to my house and the estimate is $2100. I see some others here have had problems with the optical engine. I did not purchase the extended warranty. I believe it is bullshit to purchase a product this expensive and have it rendered nearly useless 18 months later. I have not faxed anything to MIT yet and was hoping I could get some feedback here. I don’t want to pay for this repair, actually I won’t, I will go buy something else first which would be a cheaper fix now. It seems like you guys have not had any luck forcing MIT to stand up and take responsibility. Am I wasting my time with these guys? Any imput would be helpful. Thanks
November 1st, 2007 at 2:54 am
same story i bought the tv and a ps3 w/ hdmi cable to find out it didn’t really have 1080p.
November 1st, 2007 at 10:32 pm
I purchased a WD-62827 when it first hit the market for 4G’s.
It sure hurts with the 1080P sticker on the front sticking it’s tongue out at me. I see dealers dumping thes for as low as 1600 now and the specs say 1080P engine or something to that effect. I am sure they are still useless.
I was told by Tweeter that it would suport bothformays and not to worry.
I am contacting the better business bureau next week and calling tweeter to let them know what I think. The call is only for me.
Sign me up for class action….
November 6th, 2007 at 11:13 pm
Add another one — a lot of great features but the 1080P issue has me bugged, too.
Had a few issues with the unit shutting down — took the shop a month to decide that it was an overheating problem (which I had suggested initially), leading to a fan replacement. I did get a new bulb out of it however.
If there is a class action, I’d consider joining.
November 8th, 2007 at 7:00 pm
62628 here. Same issues. However Im skinning the cat by another method. I bought the 5 yr warranty from Fry’s. Mysteriously my light engine keeps going out.
They could have done this the easy way. They chose poorly.
November 10th, 2007 at 10:07 am
I too bought the 62628 model being told it was a true 1080p product and that it would be upgradeable in the future with any technology that comes out, but come to find out that I can’t even get 1080p through HDMI now that I bought an HD 1080p dvd player. I can’t find any adapters to even go from HDMI to firewire IEEE 1394. You could add me to the list because paying $4,000.00 for a t.v. set and not getting what it was advertising is fraud.
November 10th, 2007 at 10:19 am
I’m in. I paid 5000.00 for a WD62628 from tweeter. The salesman told me that it was capable of displaying 1080p. That’s the reason I was willing to pay so much because it was supposed to be ready for the future. I couldn’t wait to get my ps3 home yesterday. Boy was I mad.
November 17th, 2007 at 10:40 am
Grrrrr…I just read through the list of comments and now understand why our new Sony Blu-Ray Disc player does not play in 1080p. It’s not the player, it’s our MIT WD52628. Yes, we too were told by Ultimate Electronics in Woodbury, MN–back in Nov. of 2005–that the TV would be ready for 1080p. We went back to the store a couple of days ago, asking about this issue, and the person from whom we purchased the unit said he would call the sales rep to ask about this issue. He knew damn well why we were there (yes, Ritchie, I’m talking about you!). Ritchie said that there was an upgrade disc that could be loaded into one of the card readers. Has anyone else been told that? We are waiting to hear back, but now I’m thinking this was just an excuse to get us out of the store. Count me in on the class action suit; I have the original sales receipt which reads “1080p.”
November 20th, 2007 at 12:35 am
I bought a Mits VS50707 50″ rear projection TV in March 2001. It stopped working in Dec. 06. I called a local TV repair service and they came and picked it up and supposedly fixed it. Cost #750-it broke again would not turn on, same problem. It has been in this shop 8-10 weeks this year on 3 different occasions-still works a while then won’t turn on. So in Oct. I went to the dealer and they said don’t call the repair man again they would contact the company and see what to do. Botton line after calling repeatedly this company basically they said since it wasn’t under warrenty any more and the repair shop was not a Mitsubishi authorized repair shop they could do nothing. The repairman could not call their tech department for help, I could only take it to one of their ‘authorized repair shops’ and see if they could fix it and then pay again. Bottomline they were no help and do not stand behind their product. They even said even though it cost $1800 the technology has advanced and it probably couldn’t be fixed. I guess I am just old fashioned and expect an expensive TV to be able to be repaired. This company has no concern for its product or its consumers. We are just suckers to be taken advantage of. DO NOT BUY AND MITSUBISHI PRODUCTS!!!
November 22nd, 2007 at 10:23 pm
Please add myself to the class action suit. I purchased the WD52628 model only to find out about the 1080p false advertising scam. Bought mine at Fry’s… there was no indication this was not a “normal” 1080P.
November 24th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Same story here, but I think I found a work around. I have the WD-62628 62″ TV (for about a year now), and just purchased a PS3. After quite a bit of playing around with it, I was able to get my PS3 on the TV using 1080P, but it’s very sloppy. You have to setup the PS3 as a PC when setting up the device. You will get a very anoying message that says “invalid signal” and will go away after a moment only to return when you start a new game, or movie.
Please do count me in on the lawsuit too. Mitsubishi did a very poor job with this. I can be contacted at any time at home (321-422-5157). If no one has started the ball rolling, I will be glad to lead the charge, but will need to see if I can find a lawyer that will represent at no cost except in a win, and then ensure Mitsubishi picks up the legal costs.
However, it might be a good idea to for us to collectively write a letter to Mistubishi’s CEO, and see what they want to do when he hears about 100+ people ready to engage in a class action suit if they don’t take care of this.

Count me in as well. I bought a WD-62628 and am disappointed at being mislead into believing the TV would handle 1080P. Just bought a PS3 as well when I found out this TV will not handle 1080P.

I’m in the same boat. I purchased a wd-52628 on Dec 30 2005 from Fry’s for $3699.00. I recently hooked up my new PS3 and have run into the same problems, NO 1080P input… Count me in on the class action suit. I’m also looking for the software update, but I have not had any luck finding it.

I have just discovered the 1080p issue with my WD-62628. Bought it in June 06 for $3750,,,grr.
Luckily the vendor I bought it from will 100% stand behind their representation (they stated such via phone) and are looking at replacing it free-of-charge with a true 1080p TV. They are waiting to hear back from Mitsubishi regarding their end of the deal.
I sure hope this gets taken care of before 12-25. Just bought a PS3 for the kids. Luckily I discovered this 1080p BS before the morning of the 25th!

HOLY S#$%
Sign me up also. I bought my WD-62628 when it first came out for near $5,000. I finally got the Toshiba A-30 only to stumble across this mess. I am actually on the phone with them right now.
I’m on hold, someone is gonna fix this for us

I purchased my WD-62628 in January 06 for $4K at Magnolia Home Theater in Best Buy. I did purchase the extended warranty and have had the bulb replaced under that warranty. I had three sets delivered before i got one that worked quietly. One had a bad color wheel, the other had a fan in backwards. My set clearly said it was 1080P and with two HDMI connections had no reason to think they would no accept 1080P input. In fact, I went to Tweeters, Frys and Magnolia and researched they unit talking to people before buying. All consistently said when 1080P players came out, this set would handle it. They can not all be lying. Apparently, Mitsubishi misled stores too.
It was only when I read the thick manual that I saw no mention of support of 1080P. I felt misled too. I have nothing but praise for Magnolia and the service from Best Buy. But Mitsubishi clearly misadvertised this product.
I have had some quirky problems with my unit as well. It looses broadcast digital channel audio requiring me to unplug and replug my unit. It has locked up like a PC several times requiring the same procedure and I am not even using cable or satelite right now. I would like a firmware upgrade to resolve these issues as well as a solution to the advertised 1080P misrepresentation.

So what do you folks want to do???
We are going to have to hire a consumer lawyer..
We need to get this squared away, Mitsubishi needs to remburse us for this false advertising.
I say get a true 1080p model or some sort of $ compensation.
I contacted mits and they held firm on not doing anything for compensation of owners with this false 1080p dlp model.
Man, I paid 4 grand for this model just to have the main selling point not work.

So, we all paid big bucks on DLP and PS3s and no joy. something must be done. I’m hoping for a firmware upgrade because i really dont want to deal with a whole new setup… however a new tv doesnt sound bad either. Ill keep an eye on the forum.

Sign me up for the class action suit. I bought the unit thinking it would accept inputs from an blue ray player.

update from October 5th posting on light engine failure I had an authorized Mitsubishi repair shop provide a diagnostic on my set and confirmed the light engine was bad. I sent a letter as a I have purchase three sets over the past 13 years the first two with extended warranties this one 73927 without did’nt think I needed it the first two are still running trouble free! Ant way faxed the letter, copy of original receipt and diagnostic report to Mitsubishi and they agreed to replace the light engine at not cost except the 200 bucks I gave for the repair shop. 1738 dollars is the cost on the light engine and 250 to install I saved they had extended my warrantyto two years which means nothing as the set will be two years old this January. Apparently there is a bulletin released to authorized service centers to honor this extension of two years. Igot lucky on this one but waited 8 weeks for the dset to be repaired.

I spoke with Mitsubishi (the vendor had them call me). Then I even went up to a supervisor. To say that they could care less would be an understatement. They were extremely rude and full of doubletalk. Obvious that they have no intention of doing anything. Then they tried to blame the vendor.
The vendor were I bought my TV (Magnolia HIFI in Bellevue WA) took it upon themselves and gave me store credit for the total amount I paid 1 1/2 yrs ago. I got a new WD65833 1080p Mitsu TV delivered the following Sunday and took the old one away. I’m happy with the 65833. MUCH nicer picture and other features.
Good luck to everyone.

In response to Richard Miller’s last post. Everyone should not be fooled by his logic. Mit used this logic a year and a half after they had exhausted all other lies. If it does upconvert 1080i to 1080p it is still not a true 1080p signal. Moreover, i do not believe it comes close to upconverting from 1080i to 1080p because when I have my blue ray output to 720p it produces a better picture than when i change it to output 1080i. This company lied to us and used false advertising that we could not confrim until a 1080p dvd player was produced months after we bouth it in most cases. They first told me you could get 1080p over the antena input, then they said you could get it on the hdmi input #2, then they said you could get it over the fire wire input and now recently they are giving us the 1080i to 1080p upconvert bull shit. If it could do that then why didnt they say so in the first place. We all got took by this company and I will never by a product with their brand name on it whether it be televisions, cars, etc.

Please explain to me how one can achieve 1080p on this set wether its upscaled or not. The only way I can get 1080p is through the cable box. I really want to get my PS3 to run in 1080p.
My set up is PS3 to Mis via HDMI.
I am running it at 1080i in the home menu
In games it runs at 720p. (call of duty 4)

Mitsubishi’s defense about ‘upconverting’ is BS double talk IMO. It was sold as a 1080P television. It is not a true 1080P set.
I have a DVD player that upconverts to 1080i. It was never marketed or sold as a HD DVD player or a “1080″ dvd player regardless of upconversion abilities. Mitusbishi never marketed this as ‘upconverting’ or the like - it stated it was a 1080P set. Funny how their sets AFTER this model are now 1080P eh?
The bottom line is that when people pay for a product that was sold/marketed/advertised as a “1080P” then that is what they should have gotten. I could have easily paid LESS for another 1080i set. Period. I paid more $ for a 1080P and is not what I got in reality.
Question that sums it up: If you would have known at the time of purchase the details now presented would you have bought it? Most would say NO.
As for ’seeing no difference’ - that is subjective. Personally I see a HUGE difference in playing a bluray to the 1080P set I have now vs. “upconversion” on what is technically only a 1080i set. I am sooooo glad I got rid of that set!
REGARDLESS - people paid for something they did not actually get. That’s the bottom line. Anything else is just rationalization and posturing for poor ethics on marketing their product.

Unfortunately I have joined the growing list of people that got ripped off. I was sold a “1080p” T.V. (WD52627) in 2005 only to find out that my 1080p devices don’t work on it. If anyone is in the process of putting together a suit, count me in.
December 28th, 2007 at 5:03 am
Add yet another one to the list.. I purchased my WD-52628 in January 2006 just before the super bowl and finally purchased my PS3 just to find the awful truth. I’ll also contact magnolia as I purchased the TV directly from them.
December 29th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Some of you may know this but it warrants repeating. If you own a Mitsubishi WDXXXXX you can “trick” your TV into displaying 1080p through HDMI 2. You must set it up as a computer through NetCommand. If you have a playstation 3 you can then set up display manually to 1080p. It appears to work for me. Good luck.

I also bought a 73927 mits about 18 months ago. Same problems as mentioned above. I just tried the fix that anonymous put up on Dec 29th. with my PS3 and it worked. It gives you some initial error signal but after that all is working. Sorry that Mits screwed us all but at least there is a workaround.

I bought the Mitsubishi 62′ DLP rear projection TV model 62628 in November of 2005 from Sears. They had two 62″ models side by side and I chose the model that upconverts the 1080 i resolution to 1080p resolution. I did this because my sales representative informed me that very soon in the near future we would have components like DVD players and game stations that would be 1080p and that the picture is far far superior to the 1080i.
I bit the bullet and paid the extra $1000.00 to get the model that automatically upconverts the 1080i to 1080p. On a teachers salary, I really could barely afford the cheaper model at $2700., but I went ahead and purchased the more expensive model for $3700.00.
Now — here we are 2 years later and my wife bought me a bluray dvd player for Christmas and after I set it up I’m finding that the 1080p setting keeps going back to 1080i. The picture on all my bluray movies are only 1080i.
I’ve called Mitsubishi and they will not accept responsibility that they sold me a TV that is not capable of upconverting the 1080i to 1080p.
I also called Sears and they are at least willing to hear my story.
After reading these comments from many other people it sounds like we all payed alot of money for something that we thought we were getting.
Yes —it sounds like Mitsubishi knowingly offered a product that does not do what it says it will do just to make more money off consumers.
I feel Mitsubishi needs to admit what they have done and reinburse those the people they have sold this product to.
I want a new TV that does upconvert to 1080p and either Mitsubishi or Sears is going to have to settle this with me to my satisfaction.

Well since the most recent post is today, I guess we are still at the status quo = no 1080p. I bought the mitsu instead of the Samsung in ‘05 because the set was supposed to eventually support a native 1080p input. Crap. Man I hope a firmware upgrade will fix this. Meanwhile, does anyone know if you can hook up a blu-ray or hddvd player using HDMI#2 set to Computer and have it work ?
January 2nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Oooo !! Listen up. Just found this on another forum.
“Why do people keep saying that the 2006 DLPs cannot accept/pass-through 1080p over HDMI? When I had it, I ran my Anthem AVM-50 at 1080p/60 to HDMI-2 on my 52628 and it displayed just fine at 1080p. I’ve since sold the Anthem, but I purchased the Sammy Blu-ray player a few weeks ago and am presently sending 1080p from it into my 52628’s HDMI-2 port.
A few others have said this, but it needs to be repeated: HDMI-1 will NOT accept 1080p, but HDMI-2 will. It works, folks. Just set HDMI-2 as a PC, don’t use the automatic picture centering thing, and you’re good to go.”
I don’t care how to make it work as long as it will !!
