Mitsubishi WD-52627 1080p DLP Review
Sound & Vision Magazine has reviewed one of the new 1080p DLP HDTV televisions by Mitsubishi. The 52″ sets retails for $3,700 MSRP.
1080p DLP is delivered with a DLP chip that actually has half of the 1920 x 1080 mirrors, and shifts them to produce the other half (interlaced) of the image. This is unlike recent 1080p LCOS sets which do not (and can’t) use this kind of technology. The article mentions that neither HD capable HD-DVD or Blu-ray have announced support for 1080p, but if you’ll take a look at this article from yesterday, that’s not true anymore. The set does not accept 1080p on its HDMI inputs, though it’s supposed to accept 720p (the review sample did not).
The set includes two HDMI, two FireWire, and three component video inputs. You won’t have any trouble finding a connector for your devices. It also includes CableCARD and the TV Guide on-screen program guide.
If you’re looking for the screen door effect with this television, you’ll be looking a long time. It just ain’t there. But in comparing the 1080p set with a 720p set, the differences ranged from subtle to obvious, depending on the source material.
The reviewer thought quite highly of the HDTV DLP set:
Video enthusiasts will find 1080p a compelling upgrade, and the lack of visible pixels alone is enough to recommend the Mitsubishi WD-52627 over a similar-size 720p DLP or LCD television. Stepping up to a larger screen size would probably make the higher resolution of 1080p much more apparent. Still, despite being the easiest “sell” on an HDTV’s spec sheet, resolution is only one part of image quality. Factors like depth of black and accurate color play a larger role. Combine the WD-52627’s higher resolution with its all-around topnotch picture, and you’ve really got a powerful package.
