1080p Battle Joined

TI is moving into 1080p displays this year with their new wobulation DLP technology.

It looks like JVC is also getting serious about 1080p displays, with a new version of their 1080p D-ILA chip. The new chip is a 0.7 inch design, unlike the older 0.8 inch version. The new chip will result in more standardization in production equipment because their 1280 x 720 chip is the same size. It will also result in cost savings due to “enhanced production efficiency”.

The chip also employs a new pixel surface smoothing technology to produce high reflectivity for high brightness levels. When combined with the high resolution of full HD technology and the high aperture ratio of reflective liquid crystal devices, the technology makes possible the development of high performance projection televisions that offer smoother appearing images.

Also used in the device is a next-generation 8.1ìm pixel pitch (pixel length) manufacturing process that shrinks the area of each pixel by 50 percent compared with JVC’s existing 720p device.

And a JVC spokesman said that JVC plans to reduce prices on rear-projection HDTVs with screens as large as 70 inches.

JVC will introduce three 1080p models in the US in September and in Japan for the year end shopping season. The screen sizes will range from 50 to 70 inches. The 70″ model will come in around $9,500 in the States.
